Well, you signed up for Yahoo and gave out info when you joined right? Think of all the places you sign up for stuff and give out your email. Yahoo does a reasonalbe job of not selling us too much, but the facct is that EVERY time you sign up for something, you run the risk of having your email address leaked. All you need is for it to end up on one list. Then that list gets sold over and over again.

Spammers get email addresses via different means. eg.-

message boards, where email addresses are displayed.

Your pc being infected - they can discover working email addresses that are sent back to them when you're online

Some of the places that you have signed up for free or paid for stuff pass-on email addresses, often for money.

They use computing power to generate millions of potential email addresses, at know websites, eg. xyz@spamstinks.co.uk. They then spam to these addresses.

Spammers can automatically tell alot of the time if the email is read, and especially if it's replied to - and thus which of the guessed addresses are actually real. Often lists of verified email addresses are sold on to other spammers, but they the discoverer will spam you as much as possible, in the hope that you will buy.

If people didn't try to buy 'something for nothing' 'free lunch' type products - or even genuine products that are sold via spam mails - they would go out of business and it would stop.

Filter out potential spam and never post your email address on a public bulletin board. It's asking for trouble.

Good luck! Rob

Every time you sign up for something you run the risk of that company giving your email address out to spammers. That's why you should check their privacy policy first. If you give those free item offers your email address you are really likely to get spammed.

Spyware, Adware will collect data from your address book and send it to the company responsible for the program who then sell it on.

Viruses, Malware will send email from your computer usually spam to other computers again they may be infected Your address is once more harvested.

One of the reasons yahoo don't publish your address here is that Web bots trawl the web for addresess and again they are harvested and sold.

Using your yahoo id on here will also give a great clue.

e.g. fred_blogs

will atract spammers to try fred_blogs@yahoo.co.uk.

every single time you sign up/subscribe to anything you run the risk of having your email address sold to third-party sites. some sites are pretty good about keeping your info private. your best defense is to try as much as possible to not subscribe to almost anything that's available. some sites let you know up front that they "may" pass your email address on to third party sites that support them. just try to be as careful as possible. It cannot be avoided but you can keep it to a minimum. Be sure to utilize the spam settings for your email accounts and i recommend that you N-E-V-E-R respond to any spam nor try to UNSUBSCRIBE. so sites tend to give you the option to unsubscribe (get you to respond) so that they can verify that the address is in fact a valid one.

good luck.

I know how you feel, i'm getting really naffed off with these supposed foreign munchkins e-mailing saying i've won, in total now, about £10 million. I've just started e-mailing back now with witty responses such as "Get Bent", "I'm not a retard, keep your monopoly money", surprisingly i haven't got a reply yet. I'm actually finding it quite exciting wondering what excuse is coming up as to why they need me. So far i've had, chinese general died without next of kin, i've won the e-mail lottery, some dying kenyan guy. I pity anyone who thinks their real.

Sorry for the long response, i'm bored at work.

when you sign up for freeware and other things online you give your email address, thats how the spammers get yours, a good idea is to get another free email address and only use that one for free stuff ect on web.
