Yes, you can have multiple external hard drives. Just keep in mind that most external drives are slower than internal (due to working off of USB). It would be better if you use external scsi drives (but you need a scsi card in your computer)

install windows 2000/2003 server,
upgrade to dynamic volumes,
you can combine multiple hard drives into a larger one.

the best ones are the external sata drives , I have 4 of them ,all over 200 gb., no problem.
