How about a Cocker Spaniel! They are smart and easy to train. The ones I had loved kids but I know some of them don't. Not that they don't like kids but don't like the rough play that some dish out. Otherwise I think Cockers are wonderful little dogs.

Boston terrier. Some friends of mine have 2 Bostons and they are good dogs. They got one as a puppy and the other from a rescue. The one they got as a puppy has a great personality and they said she was pretty easy to train, she is a smart dog. The one they got from the rescue is pretty good too. He was a little scared when they first got him, but he mellowed out pretty quick and he's pretty smart too.

Beagles. They're not known for being a small breed, but the smalles type is only 11" high. They were number one of best pets for families, are very friendly and good natured. Since they are used for hunting, they are trainable.

I use to have a dachshund, he was very smart and loving. He was full size but I know they have mini ones if you want smaller. I would check with the local shelter and see what they have.
