Don't drink the tap water. We just returned from Puerto Plata, DR where we stayed at a Riu all-inclusive resort. They put bottled water in our room fridge. Use it for brushing teeth, drinking, etc. Keep your mouth closed in the shower. They have purified water and ice at the bars and restaurants. We did fine.

Most advisories suggest avoiding the tap water for drinking. Our (Americans) naive digestive system cannot cope with some of the coliform bacteria and other intestinal parasites. Brushing your teeth is probably safe-not enough parasites ingested to harm you. Showering is fine. Many resorts have a small pharmacy with ant-diarrhea medicines including amoxicillin and ciprofloxin for sale (cheap).
I should note that many tourists simply get GI disturbances from simple dietary changes from their routine or overindulgence of both food and alcohol.
We went to Secrets in Nov '06. No one was harmed.

My husband and I both got sick on our honeymoon last year on different days. I couldn't tell you exactly what it was, but I don't think I used the bottled water every day to brush my teeth. I was sick on our way home on 2 different flights, and still wasn't the same for 2 days after we got home. Pack plenty of sick medicine, and if you don't have an iron clad stomach, expect to get sick. Everyone I've talked to that has gone to the Dominic has.

Only drink bottled water, the resort will have plenty of water. It's not that their water is bad it's just they purify it differently than you are used to and will make you sick. If they were to come to the US they would have the same problem. They are more than happy to provide you with bottled water so don't risk it.

MOST ALL INCLUSIVE RESORTS LEAVE BOTTLED WATER IN YOUR ROOM. IT IS BEST TO DRINK THAT AND USE IT FOR BRUSHING YOUR TEETH. IT IS NOT THAT THE WATER IS BAD IT IS JUST DIFFERENT AND YOUR STOMACH MAY NOT LIKE IT. DO YOUR BEST TO DRINK BOTTLED WATER, JUICE, SODA OR WATEREVER YOU PREFER, BUT TRY NOT TO DRINK TAP WATER.
