I really enjoyed the Sally Lockheart books by Philip Pullman. They're vaguely Sherlock Holmes-ish and if you enjoy mystery and that time period, they're very entertaining. Pullman is a wonderful writer- that's enough reason to give them a try!
If you liked the part of the movie you saw, I would say you'd like the book.
There are two more books featuring Sally - "The Shadow in the North" and "The Tiger in the Well." "The Shadow in the North" has been announced as a planned TV movie as well. I'll be checking my local PBS schedule for it!
