It is actually a bark. We live in the woods and I have had three gray squirrels that would eat out of our hand. They are not creepy at all, they love to play and chase each other. I do know that when my dog chases them that they really bark then so I assume it is a warning cry to the others about danger.

Yes, once I thought I saw a rabid squirrel and it had bulging red eyes that kept staring at me. I got a bit closer and it kinda did some hissy-shreek, then climbed back up the tree.

Funny you say that, I feed 2 squirrels in my front yard every day ,I give them peanuts! They just love them, my kids love to watch them come down for the peanuts. They usually make that noise when they feel threatned by another animal,(like a CAT) maybe. They ARE very observant about their surroundings.
