There are events, but I bet there are mostly people that have affected counseling.

Freud would probably be considered the founder of modern counseling. After that I would consider B.F. Skinner and his contributions to the development of behavioral Psychology to be important. Also Carl Rogers and the development of person-centered therapy which dominates counseling today. Outside of these I would consider the development of modern psycho-tropic medication to be fundamental in the modern development of counseling b/c suddenly issues clients want to talk about become not just issues of maladjustment but diseases that need to be treated. This is a huge change.
