It seems to hit the people who can least afford it the most -- those with the fewest disposable resources. Of course free will comes into play. But is the government really doing anybody a favor to approve all these casinos popping up all over the place? Does anyone live in a state where you have concrete examples of the good done with all the revenue the lottery generates?

There was high literacy rate in NY before the existence of lotteries or casinos, without their attendant regressive tax drain on the poor. It's not "as a result" of gambling that your home states literacy rate is high.

No, I live in West Virginia where video poker machines are legal. They are on every block of town and always having money pumped into them. Stories of people losing homes, marriages, and even taking there own lives because of this. The state gets 40 percent of all revenue. I have no clue where this money goes. We are one of the poorest states in the country. I think maybe 2 percent goes to education. There are some fat cats in govt getting there wallets fatter & fatter by the day. I know the money is not going to education, becaue if it was over the last 7 years we would be some of the smartest MF's in the country. I know some owners of these machines & one machine can bring in 40,000 to 70,000 a month!! And to the dude below, why dont they just legalize crack cocaine then. Gambling is an addiction just like a drug.

Here in New York, lottery profits go to public education, with the result being we have some of the most literate public school pupils anywhere. More could be done; we still have under-performing schools here and there and some school buildings are literally falling down on the children's heads, but yeah: our state lottery profits do have a major and important impact.

Why is it that Americans jump on the 'freedom of the people' bandwagon whenever it suits them, and then criticizes the government for not getting involved when they see people ruining their lives with their freedoms?
Do you want the government to run your lives or not? Take some responsibility for your own actions. If you lose all your money gambling, that was your choice, and there is no one to blame but you!
What would Americans say/do if the government allowed casinos, but made it illegal for its citizens to gamble in them? That is what the Bahamian government has done...they build casinos for tourists, but recognize that gambling would only cause more problems for their citizens.

Serious? Many US States use their lottery revenue to fund the state's education program.
I assume you are pro-education?
You can't blame the state for people blowing their own money on casinos or lotteries. It's not the state's responsibility.

Virginia was lied to,,, we voted on the lotto because the Gov. said ALL of the money would go to the schools. As soon as Wilder was put in ( not voted, was all a federal lie, first black Governor and all) he took the money and but it in the general fund so he could pay off his buddies.
"We the People" got screwed,,again.
