I'm thinking of buying one as my next car because they are relatively cheap and no-one has a bad word against them! I have a v.w. golf which just goes on and on (201,000 miles) but apparently there's one of these mercs on 2mil miles!!

Mercedes went through a bad quality patch after 2000 and are only just pulling out of it. The 'E' class was the really disastrous one. Having said that it pulled most models down among certain BMW's and Audis, which is hardly frightening. I am talking statistics, not bar room talk or self justification. Some say they took their eye off the ball whilst using their best men on trying to make Chrysler something more than a joke. But, they also did away with a scheme giving a bonus to anyone on the production line who spotted a fault with the previous operation. This has now been reinstated. It is the massive over engineering giving long life to engines etc as much as relliability which distinguishes the earlier stuff you are looking at. This contrasts with the japanese stuff, which can be super reliable, but not because of the sort of sturdy engineering which gives long life.

Not really,
my friends 85 accord he bought for 400 bucs 2 years back.
the previous owner said that the odo meter stopped at 252 and never worked again.
he would sure have put some 20k mi in 2 years and it still runs amazing.

i would say it depends on the build quality combined with the maintainence of the vehicle.
driving on the good roads smoothly and taking care of the car promptly will sure yield better results.

when you talk about golf it is known as one of the least reliable vehicles around esp the GTI.

get it properly checked by a mechanic on the wear n tear of the vehicle before buying

Well like "Doc. justasinn..." said, check Lemon Mercedes (via Google or Yahoo). If you don't find any complaints on the model you are atfer, consider what my impression:
" So far I have the impression that all Merc 1998-1999 models are the last of the reliable, non-electronic, solidly built Mercs. I 'm in love with them all: the W210 (E-Class), W140 (S-Class), W202 (C-Class), etc.

No Type Lemon Mercedes in the browser, and you will find a complaint website. From 1990 on they are junk.!985 on the diesels are junk. Now since they are with Chrysler, they are pure junk.
I just bought a 83 300Sd. Pure power.A real Diesel,no electronics.
