Patriotism, in a democratic society, is all about taking responsibility. Citizens are responsible for the government they elect - so this responsibility should be taken more seriously than any other. Researching the candidates, understanding the issues, and then registering an informed vote. Sadly, if this were the standard for patriotism, I'm afraid that the US would be a terribly unpatriotic nation!
Waving a flag and offering unwavering support is irresponsible, and has taken this country where it is today...in a handbasket, on its way to hellll.

Patriotism is about loving the country....but not always supporting the government that runs it. I actually want to hang a U.S. flag upside down. My hubby just about had a heart attack when I suggested it. He thought I was being unfaithful to the US. But I told him that through flag etiquette...flying the flag upside down only means "My nation is under distress." It is NOT being disrespectful. Only making a true statement.

Patriotism, isn't about waving a flag, its about the pride you show for your country. It could be anything, from picking trash off the streets so our country is clean, to fighting in the military. So many people push their beliefs, on people, this is America we have the right to feel anyway we damn well please.

As an U.S. American, true patriotism is shown by supporting and defending the constitution (even when the politicians and their backers won't), even if that means supporting the rights of those who disagree with you.
For instance, I can't stand Fred Phelps and his bunch of hatemongers...but I don't think its right that President Bush signed a bill preventing them from exercising their first amendment rights to free speech.

No, it is about making a choice to STAND, with and behind the IDEALS of you country, and your people.
Not giving in to the few with the loudest voices, remember the loudest voices are usualy the most shrill, and the most offensive,
as well as the most unpatriotic.

I would say patriotism is a deeply personal thing that resides in us according to our upbringing, education and even media manipiulation. Of the three, media & Government persuasion has the most far reaching effects & limits free will & thought.

to some people it is... some people cant grasp the gravity of what it means to be patriotic. Others though, deeply understand it.... and it is usually those people who are protecting the ones that don't.

Patriotism is about being loyal to your country.
Wanting what is in the best interest of its citizens.
Patriotism is about not trying to undermine your own government.
Patriotism is not demanding what your country can do for you but rather giving of yourself freely for your country.

wassup? dude. no and no.
To be a patriot, one had to say, and keep on saying, ” Our country, right or wrong,” and urge on the little war. Have you not perceived that that phrase is an insult to the nation.
