How come an egg cant be broken when a force is applied to it at the top and bottom (not the sides)?

Oh God! I knew I should have payed attention in science class..lol. I think it's got something to do with the force of both ends pushing against each other.

If a force is applied evenly it will stand a lot of pressure.
If you try to stand on it,it will break with little force.
