how should a magicians assistant be dressed?

The assistant performs 2 key roles, one is to provide and remove props from the magician the other is to sometimes cause a misdirection.
If your show is themed then the assistant should have a similar style to the magician e.g. Victorian, Vegas, Medieval.
You also need to consider if your assistant is to be sawn in half or perform similar tricks, in which case you would want to have a minimal costume so it does not interfere with the act. Perhaps a rip away skirt could be used?

It doesn't matter as long as you don't outshine
the magicians apparel. Whether the magician
be male or female, he/she must stand out be the most prominent person on stage.. the next thing to stand out his the things the magician
holds up and shows. An assistant must dress down.. not be flamboyant or anything like that.
In other words dress as dull as you can! Ask
The magician's advise on how an assistant should be dressed!

They need to be dressed in such a way that almost everyone will notice the woman more than whatever the real trick is.
Often it helps if the woman has a flowing dress because it the skirt is positioned right the audience won't see the trick that allows the magician to do his work.

Magician's assistants should be really pretty and dressed in tons of sequins and skimpy clothing so that the audience focuses on her and not the magician.

Male or female?

Femal assistants usually look somewhere between gymnasts, showgirls and Playboy Bunnies:p ; sequined leotard and fishnets. What i think would be really cute would be a white sequined leotard with a bunny tail, black fishnets and a top hat (rabbit in a hat :p).

For a male assistant or the magician himself, black pants, white ruffled shirt and sparkly sequined jacket in either red, green, blue, silver or gold with matching tie.
