Well for me, I abuse Ritalin because I work so much more passionately, and dilligently when I'm on it. It's addictive, because you get used to performing at a certain level, and without the drugs you just can't reach that level of performance. And, the addictive element is that you keep thinking that by taking a higher dosage, that you'll get even better. Drugs are a serious, serious, serious, issue. More studies need to be done about the long term effects of psych meds like Prozac, and other prescription medicines.
As for illegal drugs, people abuse them for different reasons. Some start off in High School, trying to "be cool" or to fit in. Others turn to illegal drugs as a means to self medicate. Maybe they're uncomfortable with they're sexuality, or are dealing with the psychological turmoil of an abusive childhood, or a boring marriage. So many reasons, and there's not enough room to list them all.

Why do people use drugs?
There are many reasons why people use drugs. Peer pressure is a popular reason that drives people to use drugs. Some people think it looks cool and others may want to "escape" from reality. The influence of movies and celebrities who use drugs are also reasons. Others just like to get high. Please visit http://www.freevibe.com/Drug_Facts/why_drugs.asp for more information.

There were some circumstance in their life that gave them the urge to use a drug. Many drugs have addictive chemicals that cuase them to "need" the drug. It isn't their own control that causes them to keep using the drug, in fact, msot don't want to use the drug. I smoke cigarettes and I don't want to. While not as harmful as other drugs, nicotine is the second most addictive drug. (heroine being #1) The depletion of the drug in their bodies causes the body to physically hurt. After several days it subsides, but imagine a 3 year old's temper tantrum going on in your body, al the while feeling like you are underwater, unable to breathe. That is what it is like at its worst. Also is the reason most cannot "quit" the drug.

peer pressure, its fun, actually people who smoke pot are more stable and it really is not different than being drunk or taking Anti depressents. Being high on drugs stablizes the mind at a constant Invigoration, or intoxication. I hate ever drug on the market and every thing poisons the mind. but I do like advil.

For some it's because they don't know how to deal with the circumstances in their lives, so they look for an artificial escape.

For many, they never took responsibility for their actions and don't want to deal with it. It's sad.
