Referring to Crisis on Infinite Earths #8 storyline.

Heres pretty much what happen. When Barry allen tapped completely into the Speed force to stop the canon from firing onto the universe, he became so fast that he absorbed the energy particles and ended up getting destroyed/killed. However, because he was going so fast that, well, he turned into a streak of lightning that first struck Barry Allen that turned him into the flash. Thus, its the Grandfather Paradox. If DC was to turn this around, it can easily be done. By either phasing out that he ever turned into lightning. Also, an instance in Legion of Super Heroes involved a story where three time travelers have pulled Barry allen out of the Canon at the last second.
