Do not listen to the opinions listed above me. A fuel tank pressure sensor is part of the evaporative emission control system. It monitors tank pressure to determine if there is an evap leak in the system that would allow unburned fuel vapor into the atmosphere. It does not read fuel level, fuel pumps do not require a positive pressure to operate. Think about this.....at which point does the vent in the gas cap open? When the tank is above atmospheric? Nooo....we all know this isn't the case, (or should know). Anyone pop their gas cap on a hot day? What happens... And, what causes a vent to allow air into the tank? To replace the volume of fuel that is burned? VACUUM! Pumping the fuel out of the tank creates vacuum which must be relieved by the vent. This is not Yahoo guesses and opinions.

That is probably the fuel tank pressure sensor. It is part of the vapor management system. It is the sensor responsible for the code that sets when you leave the gas cap loose.

I haven't heard of one either, but it makes sense. Added pressure in a tank could make for a combustable environment. Also, if you were to have negative pressure, then your car would be starved of fuel...this is how...
Your gas tank is vented, typically through the fuel cap. If it were not, then when the fuel left your tank for your engine, no air would replace the room left behind. Eventually, it would hamper all fuel flow entirely, so that vent allows air to come in and keep the pressure constant.

The fuel tanks of newer vehicles must maintain a certain PSI(pounds per square inch) rating to allow the fuel pump(which is submerged in the tank)to operate correctly. The fuel cap also has an internal spring/diaphram which assists with maintaining this pressure.
