Suzuki currently use Renault's 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine (as used in Renault's Clio, Mégane, Scénic and Kangoo) in the Jimny for European sales.
Using the installation from the Jimny would be simpler, as it is already set up for the 4x4 transmission, etc.
Most small diesel engines are designed for transverse, front-wheel-drive installations, and converting them to fit the longitudinal installation of the SJ might be difficult.
The only other resonably small diesels I can think of that are installed longitudinally are the 1.9 in Audi's A4 and A6 (and the previous generation VW Passat, and the Skoda Superb), or BMW's 2.0-litre from the 1-series and 3-series. However, these are likely to be too big, heavy and powerful for an SJ.
FSO used the non-turbo Peugeot 1.9 XUD9 engine, again longitudinally, for a few years, and later Renault's non-turbo F8q 1.9-litre diesel, so these would be another possibility.

I don't know of a diesel, but I do know a 1.6 Suzuki Vitara engine will go in there, we're planning to do it! I also heard rumours a 2 litre Vauxhall engine (don't know which one) can be shoe-horned in.
Then again you did say diesel, so my answer is pretty pointless!!!
The forum of this website might be able to help. http://suzuki4u.co.uk/

Isuzu makes a small diesel, that may still be available for your purpose. also one of the new jeeps has a small diesel that is made in Italy that may work, but only if not a Calif. vehicle.
