Because truth as beauty is sometimes in the eye of the beholder. It is also very difficult to face truth. A fantasy or fallacy is so much easier to comprehend and create. People would much rather deal in fantasy than reality.

This is caused by the human variable. It is like you planning a conversation with someone, and you pre-plan what their response will be. Then you are surprised when they say something entirely different from what you anticipated.
