The Russian tactics were simply far inferior to the Japanese, who also had new, modern warships. It was an unequal match, much like the defeat of the Polish cavalry against Hitler's Panzer tanks in WW2.

...the Russians lost over 2/3 of their entire fleet (including a number of battleships) to the Japanese fleet at the Battle of Tsushima. This was the last major sea battle of the war, taking place between May 27-28, 1905, with the war ending in September. After this defeat the Russians were finished...it's hard to carry on a war against an island nation with only a third of a fleet, when your enemy has a strong full fleet.

On the land battle near the Manchurian border, i think the japs got a bad licking from Ivan later.
