is the BMW e36 m3 ecu the same as the m3 3.2 evo one?

In my experiences, the program on the ECU varies from car to car. While the M3 ECU may plug in, and the car may run, some things may be altered, such as the rev limiter. In my E34 I was running an "M5 tune" ECU, and it brought the rev limited up a bit, as well as gave it some more power, but it was advertised as an M5 tune ECU for an E34. I would be amazed if they were interchangable from one car to the next, without some changes in how the car operates.
