Radiator overflow reservoir cap should be checked for cracks in the seal allowing air to get into the overflow tank, and thus into the radiator. This is one reason why you would see steam.Saturns are a "self-burping" coolant system, so you most likely didn't do a significant amount of damage, if any at all. Getting into the red "for a second" on your coolant gage is rarely going to cause a significant amount of damage. Thermostats nearly never go on Saturns.

If the thermostat was frozen (closed) you would still have heat to the heater. If it overheated in cold weather it could be the engine still had frozed sections in it when you started driving. Check the antifreeze level (with a tester) to make sure your have enough in it.

Lack of coolant can cause the heater to quit, hot air instead of hot water pasing thru it will do that.

Hope you didn't damage the engine, suggest you have a mechanic check it out.

If you added antifreeze after the new water pump was installed, then your radiator is busted on the drivers side (doesn't matter that it was replaced a year ago). If you did not add antifreeze then your block is busted and you are screwed.
