Hate to burst your bubble, but you use 100% of your brain all the time. You may be consciously aware of only 10% of your brain activity, but the other 90% is always working. Think of all the activity your brain has to mediate....sensation, perception, thoughts, movement, your circulatory system, your circadian rhythm....and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Almost every nerve cell in our brains is active most of the time. Scientists can detect this activity by measuring the electrical currents of nerve cells near the surface of the brain. More complex tests like PET (Positron Emission Tomography) can detect oxygen consumption, blood flow or glucose consumption (the sugar that is the brain fuel) by active neurons in all areas of the brain, not just the surface. Just about ALL of the human brain is busy all the time—even when we're sound asleep.

It is measured in potential not brain mass. I dont know if its 5% 10% or whatever %.. But it is a small percentage.
First of all the misunderstanding here is that we do not "use" this % of our brains. But the problem is that we "understand" only a small % of what our minds receive. Our sensory organs receive countless information from the world around us. Our minds do not convey all of these as usefull and many are discarded.
F.e. it is unlikely that we will notice the dormant smell of paper when we open a box of chocolate. But it is there. Our mind acknowledges this data, but our conciousness discards it as useless.
To say that we "use" only x% of our minds is like saying we only use x% of our arms! The entirety of our mind (100%) is working at all times. But there are countless parts we cannot understand yet and many of theses parts that, apparently we do not even have control over.
Most people, f.e., cannot control the part of their brain that brings memories. There are people however that have photographic memory and can remember trivial details about certain things. These people have found a way to access the info we think our minds discard. Nothing is thrown away. Everything simply stays stored in our brain and can be taped by those that know where to look for.
The fact that we dont know how to "search" our mind is why we only "use" only a small % of our mind's potential.

That wasn't chanced on, it grew to become into hypothesized. That hypothesis has considering that been discredited. the belief probable began from observations of while neurons fire. however the techniques works by parallel and associative processing. image 1000 pupils in an auditorium. The speaker declares, "Charles Smith, please get up." what number pupils spoke back? The 5 who stood up? sure, yet in addition the 993 who listened, desperate they weren't Charles Smith, and stayed seated. in basic terms the two who have been asleep did not respond. that's a solid metaphor for how the techniques works. each neuron constantly 'listens' to its inputs. as quickly as the state of the inputs suits its education, it fires. After a quick restoration era, it is waiting to do it lower back. it is not proper what something of the techniques is doing, it responds in basic terms to its inputs. Intelligence is a level of ways nicely a number of those methods artwork or are able to working. psychological competence and overall performance is a function of intelligence plus education and prepare.

We only use a portion of our brain, more like 10 percent, to do everything we do. Think move eat sleep, all the rest, no one taps into. It is rumored to be possible - like the speed reading courses you hear about - focus on tapping in on this unused energy. It is also where ESP is rumored to exist... that it is possible just most people dont exercise their brain hard enough to do it. Brains ideally run on brain waves, and if like satelite and radio, information can be transfered in this way, so can brain information. It is an interesting topic. Look up Shelia Ostramer, I think that is how you spell it but I am not sure - she is a russian scientist who has been studying exactly what you are talking about. Google it and see what you find.

The rest is for discovery and exploration. And man if we ever do discover the power of he rest of our brain I certainly hope we have the wisdom to control it. Because if we don't then the following destruction will be unimaginable.
Look what we can do with what we have already, and that's using only 5%?

I use the excess capacity for storing important information like the starting lineup of the '69 Amazing Mets (Grote, Clendenon, Bosell, Harrelson, Weis, Jones, Agee, and the platoon of Shamsky/Swoboda), the highest rated non-sports television show of all time (the final episode of MASH), or the location of Alice Springs (central Australia)...stuff like that.

If The 10% of your brain that was in use was alone in there it would rattle and keep you up all night thinking of other stuff to ask about. So the rest is to fill up the empty space left over, Right?

There is no proof that we only use 5% of our brain. The whole brain is used. Each lobe of the brain has a purpose.

This is even farther off than usual - the usual figure given is 10%.

In either case, it is false. We use 100% of our brains. The statement as often used is false. It is debunked in the following article:
