Any book by Robert J. Sawyer.
He writes Science Fiction.
One of his most recent books was a trilogy called the "The Neanderthal Parallax". It was a book about a parallel historical universe in which Neanderthals, not Homo sapiens, survived to explore the world and build a civilization. The main character is a Neanderthal who is a scientist and accidental transports himself into a parallel universe where humans had evolved.
It's a pretty cool.

When I was 14 I started reading Tom Clancy novels. I would recommend The Sum of All Fears - I like fantasy books too and this was like a whole new world to me. If you dont want to venture out to that, I would say any H.P. Lovecraft book would be good. He is one of the defining authors of the science fiction genre. Orson Wells is also very notable. I really dont pick out books by title I go by author so I hope this helps.

You know what??? You remind me of me when I was 14. I'd read all the fiction books available in my school library by the time I was 15. You could try reading The Bartimaeus Trilogy. It's really good. Harry Potter, which I'm sure you'd have already read and you could even try Artemis Fowl. You'll like them all. Non-ficition is not my forte. So no comments there. Hope you like my tips.

I think, at 14, you'd be old enough to switch to more profound, well-written books than Eragon or Tale of Desparaux.

"The secret diary of Adrian Mole" I have 16 year old twin boys and they both read this book a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it. It has all the issues relating to your age group. It's written in an easy read understanding, funny and honest way.
I think there was also a second book writen but I can't remember the name of it
My boys highly recomend it

Try some of Garth Nix's books, they are like fantasy and they are perfect for all ages. Lord of the tings might be a little hard but its long and will keep you occupied for a while. Or you can try The adventures of huckleberry finn by Mark Twain.
