Your doctor is following old guidelines. The AAP now recommends waiting until 6 mos of age to introduce solids. Baby's really don't have the enzymes needed to digest anything other than mother's milk or formula prior to the middle of the first year. Starting too early also puts them at an increased risk of allergies, diabetes and obesity. I'd encourage you to wait a little longer.

Around 6 mos you can start by offering one new food no more frequently than every 5 days. This gives you a chance to watch for any reaction. Bananas, avocados and sweet potatoes are the best first foods when given around 6 mos.

I started my baby on rice cereal at 4 1/2 months. Around 5 1/2 months I started him on Stage 1 vegetables. You can give each new food 4-5 days, then start another. Yellow vegetables are best to start off with. Good luck and have fun!

Start by giving him some food once a twice a day at the same time you would have given him a bottle. I like Gerber baby foods, and any stage 1 food should be fine. You will have to figure out which one your baby likes. Have fun!

you could buy prepared baby foods in the grocery...you could see in the label if it's a stage 1 food or not... most stage 1 food are mashed vegetables like carrots or potatos... i would suggest that you introduce 1 food (taste) at a time so that you would know if you're child might have an allergy to a specific kind of food... usually 1 food for 1 week...enjoy and be patient in feeding your baby...

Guidlines have changed from when we were babies. My pediatrician says that is the old guidlines. It does lead to obesity and food allergies. My reasoning for giving it to him at 5 months instead of 6 months is because he was starting to hit 9 oz. with milk and thats just uncalled for. I recently started my 5 month old with 1 tbls. of rice cereal and 2 oz. of milk. When first introducing cereal to them you want a familier tast and almost fourmula or breast milk consistancy. I normaly give that to him for breakfeast and dinner. Keep the oz of milk the same as you would normally give him, just minus the oz. that u put in the cereal.

Hope this helps

first of all only give 1 new food a week to give any allergies a chance to show. i suggest just starting him on baby rice or rusk.
with the baby rice give him about 2 spoonfulls before his dinner and then a bottle remember tho he nos how much he needfs so his milk might drop abit.
with the rusk just break a bit off and give it to him as like an afternoon snack.
good luck and remember to keep an eye on him when he is eating`
