You can also go to http://www.walterdrake.com and buy a stick on gauge on the side of the tank and it will tell you how much is in it. I do not know how it works, but it does, and it is cheap also. It is like a stick on tempture gauge for an Aquarium to better explain it.

I'll assume you're not talking about a 20lb bottle....

in hot humid weather you can see a condensate line, in cold ...(guess )I'd pour on some boiling water & you should be able to tell the gas line level... once you figuge out the level of gas, if it is close to 1/2 & you have a 500 gallon tank, thn you have 250! a good estime is all you will get! camping catalogs have a stck on gauge that you pour hot water on & it changes color up to the gas level!

two ways, weigh it, (helps to know the weight of an empty tank), run your bare hand down the side. when tank gets noticeably colder than the top, that is where the LP gas is since it is always colder than the empty area.

On the safety guard around the valve the weight of the empty will be stamped subtract this weight from the total weight of tank and you will know how much propane is in the tank.
