Or is it already under threat, as a result of America's Imperial adventures, the alienating of its traditional allies, its more resembling a theocracy than a secular state, and on a cultural level is there not an ever growing chasm between our ideologies and value systems? Should we turn more towards Europe?

OK I am American
I think you should dump our sorry behind as quickly as you can. I am embarrassed to live here and Canada wont take me. Save your countries dignity and reputation while you can. We are a lost cause that has spun out of control. The country is being run by the corporations and all they care about is uping the profit margin at any cost. Yes Bush only has a year to go but those damn red states will most likely vote in another one just like him.You should turn towards Europe or Australia - any place but here.
Please come and get me!!!!!!!!!!

America is a big place that speaks ours, and the Spanish, language. America also shares many of our values, the consequences of our capitalist living appears to be wasteful however we are all consumers and joining Europe seemed to me to be an expensive mistake, America shares our imperial measuring system and metric is arguably inferior to our fading system. If we stay in Europe (France), watch out for the 'mile' to be replaced.

Yes, the world has become more volatile and right wing Government actions don't help but don't forget Al Qaeda also attacked French interests, although they seem reluctant to help with finding a solution, a cynic might say this is because their inferior toilet design suites developing countries more but I don't squat when I take a dump and I use toilet paper and all this talk of recycling stops when it comes to using bog roll. Planting more trees is an idea (not involving child labour; primary schools take note) and when you add the global implications of climate change why don't we make a statement and stop hacking down pine trees to celebrate Xmas? It is a rather poor German idea adopted by our German Royal Family dating back to Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, in my opinion.

Rejoining the Common Wealth and dumping Europe would seem a logical step however I also share many European liberal ideals so free trade is the answer.

In closing, I have to sadly concede, corruption in high offices happens all over, we pay our money and we take our choice.

Oh where to begin. The United States "imperial" adventure is about spreading democracy and freedom. Iraq and Afghanistan are not colonies of our government. As far as the "theocracy" label, your moves toward extreme secular states tends to be very hostile toward religion. America was founded on the idea of religious freedom. Religion is a very important cornerstone of our society, and our constitution was written with the intent on the people being a moral and just society. As John Adams said "It is wholly inadequate for any other society."

You are right our so-called special relationship with the US is over. They have extracted all the benefits to them from it and are now moving away from us towards Japan and the Far East.
As far as Europe goes. No good has ever come of Britain's associations with Europe since Julius Caesar, William the Conqueror, Napoleon, Hitler, and Jacques Chirac. So why should we ignore the lessons of history and turn to them?
There is a group of countries in the world with whom we have very strong ties of language and kinship. They are called THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH turn back to them before it is too late and they all change into republics.

i don't think that our relationship with the U.S is under threat its only the Bush administration that is causing problems. Once Bush has gone things will pick up i am sure, we are members of the E.U but that shouldn't affect our relationship with America. They have so much in common with us and they are good friends we need them more than they need us.

We need to do what is best for us. You cannot be 'friends' with Imperialists. They want control, not allies. If we do as they say, they will like us, if not then we are a "rogue nation". We can be friendly and non-aggressive but let's not forget that base on the Chagos Islands base they have to watch over and attack us if need be. And how angry they were at us for nuclear testing when they still have nukes. Its best to be independent.

did you want anyone to actually answer this one? You seem to have your answer already.

I think we will always be allies in times of need but this Iraq war is straining the realtionship for a lot of people.

We could not have defeated Hitler without the US so we will always feel duty bound to support them.
