You could go to a bookstore with a large magazine section, and pick up some of the latest design mags - CMYK, for example. Flip through them on a regular basis, find designs that grab you and figure out why you like them. You can get inspiration everywhere you look, from shampoo bottles to graphics on billboards, nature, menus..

An excellent book is:http://www.amazon.com/Robin-Williams-Design-Workshop-2nd/dp/0321441761/sr=1-2/qid=1170765023/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-4689853-6326510?ie=UTF8&s=books

I think this will really help you, good luck.

Hi there
If you have the option of making up a company then you really got it made... i had this assignment in college too...i made up this rollerblade speciality company (i chose something specific so i'd have less explaining to do). i thought about what kind of people the company would try to appeal to the most, and settled for a street style theme. the easiest thing to do i guess would be think of maybe a hobby or passion of your own (if for instance you play the guitar you could try designing for a made up guitar company) if its something you do your more likely to know whats going to appeal to like-minded people.
I know how you feel about your work not pleasing other, ive been working as a graphic designer for a year (finished my course last feb) n i still feel that way, A LOT. you just gotta keep at it. as in the previous answer, keep reading, keep learning and dont worry about finding your style. as a grahpic designer you may have to work on designs for all kinds of companies so one or two particular styles may not work for all of them all the time.
