Hi James,

Day-dreaming is a modern phenonomen or idea if you like and occurs when a person is usually without a real goal or objective.
They become easily distracted when what they are doing does
not require any real physical participation.

In ancient times, people lived simple lives and were not informed
like people are today and did not have the mental stimulation we are constantly bombarded with today. Their lives were all about survival and hunting and the 'doing' of things that is all they knew and understood and so they could not day-dream of anything if there was nothing outside of that life they could focus their minds upon. But it is also very important to remember that they were never bored and because their lives were very hard, they ate and fought and hunted and built homes all day, everyday. There was not a spare moment that they could sit and reflect.

Today, we day-dream because we live very un-challenging lives and although people study or work, they are not using their natural instinctive or cognitive abilities to their fullest extent like ancient people did. Very few people like going to school or the work they do and this makes people contemplative. They think about food, falling in love, conquering a good paid job, holidays where they can escape from modern life.

Notice the kinds of day-dreams people have?. They are thinking about nurturance and stability that is the food, a good paid job that is the deer caught in the hunt that feeds the ego and pride. Everything people day-dream about is all about getting back to basics in many ways (the simple life that was full of hard work but rewards for that hard work and for the unity of people we no longer have a sense of community that we have today. We all day-dream about what we long for because we want to be challenged and inspired but aren't if we are day-dreaming.

We day-dream to escape from this life we know now and because very few people are happy in it. We have no real goals or incentives in our modern lives that our past lives were full of things to do. We are also far more emotional people as we have become modern and are informed about what we feel and what the emotion is called - this makes us educated and why we feel and think things much more strongly than we did in the past and why day-dreaming becomes addictive and automatic because we can now programme the mind in ways we couldn't in the past by the information we are surrounded with.

It is information that allows us to have day-dreams and time to dwell upon our desires and dreams.

Hope I have helped, but it is true.

We daydream while we are awake, about fanciful thoughts thay may or may not be related to our immediate situation. Daydreaming may take the form of a train of thought, leading the daydreamer away from being aware of his immediate surroundings, and concentrating more and more on these new directions of thought. To an observer, they may appear to be affecting a blank stare into the distance, and only a sudden stimulus will startle the daydreamer out of their reverie.

Why do you think you day dream?

Could it be you are bored, work, money, life in general. You envy what others might have, the grass is always greener.

Do you want to change some thing in your life, are you ready for change?

i guess that we day dream during class because we have that concentration required and also maybe because the topic may not be so interesting to us, so we dream about things that interest us and catch our attention.
