The first answer is a good one for your first question. Although, depending on whether there is anything on your computer that you really want to keep and can't re-install or not you might want to re-format the hard drive. You can easily find instructions for this on Google or you can e-mail me and I'll give you some.

Regarding virus protection I would avoid using more than one as they can cause each other problems although I have no experience of NTL netguard.

I would also avoid using Norton! This sounds strange but I know many people who agree with this including people on Answers. Norton is not worth the money you pay for it. I had problems with my computer and Norton failed to find anything on my computer but AVG free edition found several viruses, removed them and fixed my problem.

You can download it from this link:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

Look for the orange button halfway down the page "Download free version"

I highly recommend it - it has kept my system free of viruses for a long time and is truly free!

Good luck

Backup ALL your Windows files to DVD-R's or an external USB Hard Drive or High Capacity Flash Drive FIRST because you'll have a tough time installing the drivers for your hardware otherwise.

Then if your PC didn't come with a Windows XP Installation Disc; search for a folder in Windows called I386. Include hidden files & folders in your search by clicking on the "advanced options" button & in folder options click "show hidden files & folders". In there should be a WINNT32.exe, double click it to start the installer (if it says that your windows is different, then go into control panel, add or remove software/programs, & uninstall windows xp service pack 2 or 3). You will need to activate Windows XP though after 30 days (I did mine last night; it's free to phone & easy to do but when it asks you the questions press the corresponding telephone buttons for: bought pc with windows installed, the copy of windows xp is only on one pc, that you changed the hardware, but you didn't change the motherboard, then your application should be accepted).

Afterwards, to install the Drivers again, you'll need to find the device(s) in Control Panel>System>Hardware Manager, then put the Backup Disc in that you made earlier & select the Disc Drive as the source to look in for the driver(s).

5/30/08, the current exchange rate GB to US 1.00 GBP = 1.97920 USD So your computer is selling for $987.62 in American Dollars, whcih I think is way too much money for the computer you have quoted. I would demand an Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition 4 Gigs of RAM at 800 Mhz DDR2 2 500 Gig Hard Disks, SATA III <<-- Note, III, not II The lightscribe you said is fine and so is the graphics card, with at least 512 Megs of RAM Number of USB's is a little low, could be 10 I could put a computer together like this one above, with the BEST Asus motherboard, for around $750 here in the US. So I think $237.62 (120 Pounds) is too much for a profit margin, unless this includes the opeating system cost, which makes more sense. My opinion says you should never pay more than $100 (approximately 50 Pounds) for labor to build a computer.

If you don't have the full Windows disc, or a recovery disc, theres probably a recovery partition on your hard drive. If you ring the company you bought the pc from (or try their website) they should talk you through using it.
I wish they'd give a sheet of instructions on this when they sell you the pc; you can make a recovery disc yourself. So return it to factory settings, then make a recovery disc.

As for running 2 anti virus programs, its not recommended. They conflict.
Theres a list of software on my 360 blog (click on my pic, follow the link from the profile page). You need more than an anti virus these days I'm afraid.

You should have a programme called system restore all ready on your computer, that should take you back to just before your problems started, to find it go to 'start -all programmes -accessories - system tools -system restore. just follow the prompts and it will fix any thing that is wrong ,also make sure that you haven't installed anything that has interferred with the scan discs you already have. also install yahoo toolbar as that also has scan discs to stop any spyware that may have got on your computer already.. that is a safe way to sort out your problem.. if this doesnt help then you may need to reboot but as a last measure good luck

Megadan is right about how to get your system back to how it was. If you have any restore points you might be able to go back to them using system restore (this can be accessed from Start/Help and Support or from your Programs menu, usually under Programs/Accessories/System Tools)

With regard to running two different anti-virus tools simultaneously, this is not a good idea as it can cause conflicts in your system

use your recovery disk and start afresh just use ntl netguard you don't need the two as it will slow your PC right down
a second hard drive is always handy to keep things on you can get a cheep external one

You should RUN only one anti virus program at a time. I would get rid of Norton, it is a system resource hog and doesn't do that good of a job. AVG Free does a much better job and is a free Anti virus from Grisoft. I would also recommend that you get Ad-Aware from Lavasoft, Spy-bot Search & Destroy at cnet's downloads.com , and Microsoft's Windows Defender. They are all free downloads.

ntl netguard does causes conflicts with other antivirus and spyware progs, so uninstall all the others, then go control panel on xp maintainance ect, and go to system restore, and go bcak to a previous date to before you had the probs.

If you got a recovery cd you can use this to retore it back to the original setting. Otherwise you can use a Windows CD to re-install the operating system.
