1984 by George Orwell and The Martian Chronicles or Fahrenheit 51 by Ray Bradbury. They were written in the late forties and early fifties but are a few of the greatest science fiction novels of all time. Kurt Vonnegut is a good writer too, but his books are on the silly and not serious side.
