Very gently, with a teeny tiny washcloth.

OK, if you're serious, the ball isn't the problem. Look at the rollers and make sure they're clean. Use a tweezer to get off hairs and lint and clean with alcohol.

Best answer: get an optical ("female") mouse. No balls at all.

The same way I clean mine with soap and water but also clean off the rollers inside the ball chamber.
