Cricket in UK - mid April to mid September
Football in UK - mid August to mid May
The complication with football comes with the playoffs, European and international competition. The playoffs stretch to the May/June border, the Inter Total Waste Of Time Cup starts in early July and World Cups/European Championships are normally in June/July with friendlies beforehand, so a top player like Thierry Henry can literally get two weeks off in a WC/EC year before reporting for pre-season training.
