90% of first class mail arrives the next working day. 2nd class mail is supposed to be delivered by the third working day after posting.
So first class mail is about two days quicker.

Second class mail is for bulk stuff. It is billed by the Post Office by weight of non-exempt material, not by item. So if you have a newspaper (as I did) and it is 40% advertising and 60% news, you only pay postage on the 40%, because the distribution of the news is free.
As to time ... it depends. Once the items are in the local Post Office, the delivery times are identical for first and second class items. However, getting to the local can be a bit tricky. At times when there was a high volume of mail, I have had bags of second class shunted into a corner for a day or more because (as second class mail) the Post Office did not give it as high a routing priority. Other times, because my bags were all going to a single end-destination Post Office (each bag was pre-sorted), sometimes my second class papers arrived overnight.
So it depends.
The real trouble with second class is that there is no way to tell. If it has been an unreasonably long time since you were expecting a second class item to be delivered, I would call the sender and ask for a resend.

I think Royal Mail say 2-3 days after posting. In my own experience I find that it it takes 2 days, 1st class usually arrives next day and 2nd class the day after.

Second class mail includes magazines and periodical, which may take 4-5 days to arrive, depending on where you are from the sender.

It really depends on where it's going!, why not do a test and send 2 envelops to your self, one with a first class stamp and the other a second class!

up to five days, but did you know, if you put more than one stamp on an envelope, it will go first class? for instance instead of a single 2nd class (23p) 2x10p, 1x 2p, 1 x 1p.
