an AMPLIFIER (without getting technical) is a piece of electric/electronic equipment that amplifies a signal (usually an audio signal) and powers it to a speaker. In order for a speaker (any speaker) to pump out sound it must have an amplified signal. A speaker in and of itself is just a paper cone with a magnet (it has no power supply). Therefore, an amplifier powers that speaker and sends an audio signal though it, producing sound. For example: You take an electric guitar, you can't just plug it into a solo speaker...you have to plug it into an amplifier that is itself connected to speakers. NOTE: neither and amplifier nor a speaker will produce sound by themselves.

If you have an original source (ie, ipod, cdplayer, guitar) you can plug them into an ampilfier which is connected to a speaker. this basically as it says amplifies the sound of your original source. and amplifier by it self will NOT give you sound you MUSt have a speaker connected. a guitar amp etc. will already be connected but a seperate amplifier will not be.
