I have a pre-cast concrete garage, and want to replace the asbestos roof.It is approx 19'x10',and has a shallow pitch of about 15".It has three trusses inside, all narrow angle iron, about 55" apart.Apart from removing the asbestos, any idea how to go about re-roofing,and the best/easiest materials to use?

fix timber battens to the angle irons then fix profiled sheeting to the battens , finish around the edges with 90* angle sheet. You would be best with insulated sheets as sometimes with the plain sheets you get condensation. When removing the asbestos try and keep the sheets whole and wet them to keep the dust down. You could fix the battens over the asbestos sheets the fix the profiled sheets this saves you putting on insulated sheets. Hope this is of some help.

Remove the shingles, there should be a some type of sheeting under them. If it is in good shape lay down felt and go back with new shingles.

If the sheeting is rotten, replace it with the same type that was there originally.

If it were mine, and I was re roofing it. The following is the way I would do it.

Tear it down to the trusses, Sheet it out of 2/4 `s on edge, power nail or screw them to the trusses. On 2 ft centers. Purchase a good grade of metal roofing, and screw it down to the 2/4`s.
using 2 inch screws with neoprene washers, and put them in with a ratchet, or a palm held power drill. Palm held you will not over tighten, and so call strip the screw out of the wood. Don`t use a 3/8 electric drill.

You may have to paint my roof in 35 to 40 years. Your asbestos will be lucky to last 12.

contact your local skip firms for advice many will supply you with a lined skip for asbestos, and then they dispose of it in the correct manner.as far as removing it then just make sure you use a face mask to avoid any dust.most asbestos is not the dangerous type anyway, especially if its a concrete then it should be ok as the age makes a difference.go for corrugated galvanised sheets as a replacement that way the original metal roof bars will be fine to use again and strong enough,if you dont like the idea of a shiny galvanised roof then you could paint the sheets with bitumastic black paint.insideyou can line it out if prefered by using light rails and hard board fixed to the concrete via brackets.

There is a common misconception that only a licensed removal agency or local authority can remove your tired asbestos garage. The Environment Agency will grant a license to a company to become a bonafide upper tier waste carrier. Even so, the company still has to have a means of legitimately disposing of the waste preferably an account with the large landfill organisation. Needless to say, checking the credentials of the company including their license number is a must.

Firstly if it an asbestos roof you will need to contact the environmental health dept at your local council. As asbestos is classed as notifiable and a danger to health especially if it is disturbed. Also it has to be disposed off under a controlled environment and conditions by contractors wearing protective clothing and facial masks. The asbestos is then disposed of on a licenced site for for purpose.

You need to contact your local council, you may find then that they make you use an authorised contractor to remove the asbestos as this is now a restricted material. You are not authorised to remove it yourself, although you own the building, you may be liable to prosecution as a result of just removing it yourself, if you break any of the pieces you risk contamination and contamination of any ground around you not to mention neighbours. Please look into this thoroughly before removing any of the roof.

As for a replacement I would think that boarding and then felting would be your easiest option.

with the old roof removed ..lay 6 by 2 joist across the 10 foot width...space them every 4oomm... you will need 17 ..then fit FIRRING STRIPS down the opposite way ..you will need 10 ..firring strips are pieces of wood ..which are machined into a long triangle normally 4 metres long ..100mm one end to nothing the other ..this creates the fall ..then fix Stirling board to the top ..fit fascia boards all round ...then fix roofing felt to deck ..starting at bottom..working way up look in yellow pages under roof supplies ..they will have all you need ..and don't to forget to secure roof to rest of garage with steel restraining straps
