Have a look in the manufactures handbook and service book for history.
it depends on engine type and size. (petrol/diesel)
if you dont have the service record or handbook contact the main dealer to ask the question.
its fine asking a mechanic to check it but the only real way of saying if its ok or not is to remove it and check for cracks, this cant necessarily be done in situe.
In most cases the cambelt (timing belt) drives the engine, if it breaks you would prob end up with bent valves and gauged pistons, this may mean a new cylinder head at the least, so the cambelt is a very important thing not to mess around with.
It will prob make sense to contact the main dealer as they change and swap these items service interval quite often, i.e if they find they are breaking or cracking early they can reduce the recommend lifespan of these items.
If you have you vehicle serviced at the main dealer they should be checking this belt as part of the service routine too, that way they will report it to you either by wear, time or mileage.

Hope this helps.

Replacement not only depends on miledge but the amount of time the engine is running, sitting in slow moving traffic wears on the timeing belt but doesn't show on the miledge. Talk to someone who knows what there talking about and will consider all the facts. Don't mess around with the timming belt ,one minute the motor is fine running perfect and the next minute the belt breaks and the engine has a major failure and a big time repair charge, or even a total engine loss.
