The Punto (from the introduction of the second-generation model in 1999) has used electric-power-assisted steering (EPAS).
It does not have any fluid in the system - ignore any responses suggesting you check the fluid level, as they don't apply to the Punto.
The system is electronically controlled (with two modes, a lighter mode for parking accessed by the "city" button on the centre console, and a normal mode). All electronic systems have their off-days, and occasionally need to be re-booted to work properly. This seems to have happened to your steering. If it happens again, look for a loose connection, corrosion of wiring and/or electrical connections, or a bad earth connection around the steering system. I think the EPAS unit is mounted where the steering column meets the rack, at the lower rear of the engine bay.

I'm with minimetro.

I sold my Fiat Punto for £0 back in August. I danced in the street as the guy drove it away.

The only thing worse than a Fiat is a Mini Metro, of course. I used to carshare with a Mini Metro owner over a 50 mile commute. I have never been so regularly terrified.

You could try wiggling the relays - might be a bad connection.

I got told from my mechanic that if he found out i bought a punto he was gonna slap me! Sounds like your steering fluid is low but i would get this checked out coz it could be dangerous

Check the transmission fluid level under bonnet for power steering....you may need to top it up.
