WOW, most of the people who have answered you have just pulled some weird answer out of their butts and have no idea why the costume is black. In the comics, Spidey ended up on another planet in a story line that I believe was called the Cosmic Wars. His suit was ripped and he got the black one from some type of machine thing. It could change it's appearance to match clothing and it enhanced his super powers. What Peter Parker didn't know was that it was a living symbiot (not sure if spell right) that tried to merge with him and bring the more aggresive traits of his personality. When Peter realized that the suit was trying to take control over him, he manage to get it off of him in a bell tower of a church and it found Eddie Brock who hated Spiderman from getting him fired from the Daily Bugle. The hate that both the suit had and what Brock had merged into Venom, a bad guy that looked like the black suit spidey, except for the huge muscles and the vicious teeth and tongue.
In the half hour cartoons, it was presented in about the same way, except for the suit coming from a rock like substance that Jameison's son brought back to earth aboard the space shuttle. The shuttle crashes, Spidey helps saves them, comes into contact with the rock and gets the suit, & powers...from there on basically same thing as above.
How exactly the movie is going to protray it, I am not sure, but it should still be the same as it being a living enity that wants to merge with Peter Parker and as he notices the changes, tries to get rid of it, and a dangerous super villian is born. Venom later has an offspring when the suit breaks Eddie Brock out of jail and leaves a piece of it behind. This piece comes in contact with Cletus (Cassady, I think) and it becomes Carnage. Even more dangerous than Venom because the host is a psycho killer.

For the most part Avenger was right. There are speculations that the cartoon verison is what will be used. If you watch Spiderman 2 Jameson seems to leap a rather large distance from a dock to the ship without much trouble, where the cops seem to stop as if they cannot make it. Also, the black & white wedding scene. Someone mentions he is complaining about being tired or fatiqued at one point in the movie but I've yet to come across that scene myself since Jameson doesn't appear very often. These were all things fans picked up on and use as claims to the possiblity of the alien currently being on Jameson. But for now they are just speculations.

They are introducing Venom. Now which storyline they use we are not sure of yet. There are 3 main storylines for Venom.
1. Marvel Unvierse 616: In Secret Wars #8 (December 1984), Spider-Man damages his costume in combat and is directed to a facility where he can find a new costume. He activates a machine that releases the symbiote in the form of a black liquid. When Spider-Man touches the liquid, it covers his body and, reacting to Spider-Man's thoughts about the costume worn by the second Spider-Woman, forms a new costume. To Spider-Man's surprise, the costume can mimic street clothes and provides a seemingly inexhaustible supply of webbing.
Once back on Earth, Spider-Man learns the costume is sentient alien symbiote that wishes to fuse permanently with him and often controls him while he sleeps. With the aid of Mister Fantastic, Spider-Man discovers the symbiote is vulnerable to sound, and he uses sonic waves to remove it. The symbiote escapes and attempts to forcibly bond itself to Spider-Man in a church tower. The clanging of the church bells and Spider-Man's rejection of the symbiote, weaken both the alien and Spider-Man. The symbiote, using its remaining strength, carries an unconscious Spider-Man to safety from the bells before it slithers away.
This rejection left the symbiote extremely bitter toward Spider-Man, a trait it would share with its future hosts. It then Found Eddie Brock. Eddie Brock was a reporter who blamed Spider-Man for debunking his prize story, the Sin-Eater case, humiliating Brock and ruining his career. Attracted by his intense hatred of Spider-Man the symbiote bonded with Brock.
Ultimate Unvierse: "Venom" (Ultimate Spider-Man #33-39). [12] Peter meets Eddie Brock, a bright but irresponsible student who owns an experimental Venom balm that Eddie's and Peter's fathers invented while working on a cure for cancer. Peter wears it, and due to its bloodthirsty nature nearly kills a robber who had recently murdered a shopkeeper. Peter, in horror, destroys the sample. Brock finds out and takes the other sample, thus becoming the Ultimate Venom.
Spiderman The Animated Series: Spider-Man comes across an alien substance attached to a spaceship crashlanded by John Jameson that attaches itself to Peter and forms a new black costume. It makes Spider-Man ten times the hero he is with enhanced abilities. But something goes wrong; the superhero also gets more ruthless. Meanwhile, Eddie Brock frames Spider-man for the stealing of a rock called Promethem X, in which it was actually the Rhino for the Kingpin. Now, there is a 1.000,000 dollar reward for Spider-Man's capture! Part 1 of 3. When Spider-Man's black costume is revealed to be alive, the superhero still decides to use it to get back the Prometheum X. Meanwhile, J. Jonah Jameson figures out Eddie Brock was lying about Spider-Man stealing the Prometheum X, fires him and calls off the 100,000 dollar reward. The Kingpin is worried about that Brock has evidence of him being a crime lord, so Smythe hires the Shocker to kill Brock. In the end, Spider-Man removes the alien costume, only for it to find a new host. Part 2 of 3. 3 of 3: Like the comics, the alien goes down inside the church and finds Brock there expressing his hatred for Spiderman. They join together and form the villian known as Venom.
Venom has been a villian in all the universes except for 616, which is the mainstream Marvel universe where everything takes place in the comics unless otherwise stated by a writer. Venom has off and on been a good guy, more recently the guy who was The Scorpion ended up with the alien costume. Eddie is somewhere with Cancer.

Did no one see the answer hartsock1 put? Spider Man doesn't change his outfit and then calls him self Venom. Venom is the creature that is born from the rejected costume, since Spider Man refused to be controlled by it. Don't answer if you don't know and if you don't know scroll up and read hartsock1's reply to the question, he knows what he is talking about.

in comics the reason spider man's costume is because when the symbiote fell from space Eddy Brock just happen to be walking by and it hit him and he became Venom and when Spider Man and Venom battled each other it fell off and hit spider man and it turned spider man's suit black.

That will be Venom!
In Spiderman 3 in the film, Peter Parker's spiderman suit suddenly changes during a strange storm.
The black suit (Venom) transforms Peter as well brining out the dark, vengeful side of his personality that he is struggling to control.
Peter must overcome his demons as two of the most feared villians yet, Sandman and Venom, gather unparalleled power and a thrist for retribution to threaten Peter and everyone he loves.
I can't wait to see the movie! Should be a lot of fun, I enjoyed the first two.
