I have a 2 year old daughter and a 7 month old and one thing that i use the most is a Boppy its a semi-circular pillow that you can use if you are nursing, when they were newborns i would even place them in the middle of it when they took a nap, they would curl up in a little ball and you could tell they were just so comfy. you can also use it as tummy time, or even when they start to sit up, it gives them support and if they fall back the boppy saves them. its probably the best thing i have ever got. You can get them at babies r us or toys r us, target, walmart maybe, and online. you can also get different colors and patterns for the covering as well.

I would have to say don't register, have a gift card extravaganza, on invitations your hostess could add a note at the bottom, gift cards and monies tree will be planted at the front door, don't forget to plant your gift. Have a fake tree inside of the entry way and have clothes pins painted pink and blue attatched to it for guests to pin money to. Because the thing you will need most depends on your situation. If money is an issue, then obviously some of the things other people think to be necessities to them might be something you could live without. This away you could go and buy diapers, wipes, lotion, onsies (a must), and things that you will need rather than want. Have your hostess pass the word to all the guests as they see them in passing or as they hand deliver their invitation, to let your guests (friends and family) that you would like to be able to take the gift cards and buy things on an as needed basis. Trust me people will still bring in gifts, but the cards and even money will be a greater asset. To make the party interesting have catalogs (free) from the place you were going to register have friends and family show you some helpful things and you decide how important they are to have. Also if you just want to have a social, where people just pass through, grab a snack and leave, note that on the invitation, have finger type foods and drinks for all who stop in.

I agree with the boppie pillow, and the gift card for walmart, or what ever place is near you, and then the diapers, if you have onesies and reciving blankets, and breasts (if you can use them it is the best) you cant go wrong then you can have two or three months with your child to figure out what you and the baby need, every child (even the ones in the same family will have totaly different personalities), I had one that was terrified of the swing and I did not use it till the next child, I could have used that money on something else, and then on the breast thing, find a breast feeding support group now... they are the best thing in the world for new moms (take it from a mother of three...) http://www.lalecheleague.org/
All the best to you and yours!!!!

This is going to sound funny, but Happy Hiney ointment is the best around and it is available only with a prescription but all the pediatricians I know is "happy" to give you one for diaper rashes. I am serious when I say my kids could have the worse rash ever and it would be clear in one day. I also could never live without GOOD baby wipes. I used them for everything not just for diaper changes. Huggies has the best wipes AND diapers around I think. It is worth it not to scrimp in this area! My kids are 5 and 6 and we still use the baby wipes. They make for easy cleanups of everything with little fuss. One thing I never used or liked and I think is way over rated--the Diaper Genie. A small trash can with a lid and scented trash bags better, and I never kept the can in the baby's room but in the laundry room by the back door. Sure I had to walk to put the diapers in the trash, but my small house NEVER smelled like a diaper!

I agree that the car seat is the most important; got the Graco SnugRide travel system, which is great to put sleeping baby into the stroller while in the car seat without waking him/her up. It's also good for covering baby up with the car seat canopy and stroller canopy in poor weather (cold/wind/rain). We also liked how easy it was to fold this stroller flat, and that it stood upright instead of the tray going on the ground like some other brands do. For this purchase, we preferred Babies-R-Us over other stores because you can actually test the product in the store, they put them on sale frequently (like right now they are 20% off), and they had them in stock instead of having to pay shipping.

Also, ask for and KEEP ALL GIFT RECEIPTS! Babies-R-Us won't let you return without one anymore, and Target will only let you do it a few times without receipts before they say "no." Hope this helps and all goes well!

I would totally recommend the fisher price aquarium cradle swing. For the first three and a half months of my sons life he would not nap anywhere but in my arms which made it impossible for me to get anything done during the day, then we borrowed this swing from a friend and the napping began. He is now over 6 months and still has his best naps in this swing. It is a must!!!

Diapers are a must, I received about two months worth of diapers at my baby showers, they saved me so much money. I registered for Huggies Newborn and Huggies stage 1 at Target.

My son loves to be swaddled, but receiving blankets always came unwrapped easily. My husband and I bought a swaddler at Wal-Mart that's absolutely wonderful. It's got a pocket that you put the baby in, and then the sides Velcro around him to keep from coming unwrapped too easily. When he's fussy, I just have to wrap him up in it and he calms right down.

Obviously, sleepers and undershirts are needed; but the one thing I think people may overlook (and that I relied on so heavily with a new baby) is two dozen, thick, cloth diapers - not for them to wear (my kids never even wore one once), but to use for spit-up cloths, bath-tub de-slippery-izers, etc.

(One of my babies actually turned one into a "blankie").

Also, receiving blankets as all-purpose items as well.
