The traditional assumption that operating systems work to is 72 pixels per inch - if I remember correctly.

However more recently because monitors have increasingly higher resolutions but are not necessarily getting bigger, there is a lot of discussion about changing the assumed pixels per inch number. I am not too sure what changes there are or whether the computer industry will stick to 72 pixels per inch.

Hope this helps.

The question is incorrect. Pixel is not a unit of measurement.

Inch is a unit of measure ment, You can always tell how many pixels are there in an inch but you cannot tell how many pixels make up an inch.

Let me explain. Say your monitor is working at 800X600 Resolution then you would have 24000 pixels in a square inch.

If you are running at 1024X786 you would have 804864 Pixels in a square inch.

Some one correct me if i am wrong. I always tought this is correct but after answering this question i am having a doubt.

Any further communication in this regard is welcome.

It varies. When creating or manipulating images you can determine how close together the pixels are, in other words, how many pixels there are per inch.

Typically images on the internet will be 72, 96 or 120 pixels per inch.

Pixels are dots. They're not a measure of distance. The number per inch depends on the device you are talking about: in some machines it might be 100, in others it might be 1000.

The size and amount of a display pixel is determined by the screen resolution and diagonal size of the monitor displaying it. i.e the better resolution the more pixels there per square inch.... someone with a low resolution could have 5000 per square inch while someone with high resolution could have 20000 per square inch
