..? Why do they talk giving the evil git time to work himself out of the situation and turning the tables. It think its one of the worst cliche's ever!

If I had my enemy on the floor begging for their life and I wouldn't think twice. I think its so they can spread the fights over more episodes.

Take Transformers for example, how many times has Prime and Megatron had a 'final' battle, only for Megatron to fly away hurt - recharge and come back in another episode?!

Yes and why did the baddies always lock up the "A" team in a gigantic workshop full of welding equipment, diesel engines etc.

Of course that's what makes them "baddies" in the first place... inadequate planning.

That's the problem right there..
Many people do not think twice..
Thinking twice is a human quality often ignore or uncultivated.
If our world leaders had the ability to think twice, this would be a better world.. I think the cliche lies in the fact that it's so critical an ability but seen as a weakness..

Looks like you answered your own question. Bad guys dead...no episode. Sure it's a cliche but I also think they're trying to show the contrast between good and evil. The good guy not willing to lower himself to his opponents level by killing.

My question, which is a question originally raised by Scott Evil, is this: Why do the villains always come up with easily-escapable elaborate schemes to do away with heroes, rather than just shoot them? I realize that sharks with frickin' laser beams on them are a lot more interesting than just a plain handgun, but if the evil villain really wants to do away with the hero nemesis, then why not just shoot him?

In reference to transformers, What do you think would have happened if he had finished him off first attempt? you wouldn't have a cartoon to watch anymore would you because the whole show was based mostly around those two characters!!! And if people try to bring in new main characters its normally a disaster!

It's a bit like that handy hint that says 'Evil Baddies- When you capture james Bond, shoot him straight away- don't give him a guided tour of your headquarters guarded by a gorgeous girl in a bikini........'
A narrative escape route,methinks...

You can't do anything about it. It's what the film makers say otherwise, the story would just end fast and not having any thrill at all.

It's the hero thing to do. Try to reason with your enemy and turn him to your side instead of killing him.
