It is based on the Battle of Thermopylae (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae ) however, no modern history believes that there were actually one million Persians attacking the 300 Spartans, placing the number some where over 100,000 (which by no means does not mean what they were able to accomplish any less amazing). This was probably one of the most heroic stands by any out-numbered force in the history of man (as well as one of the most incompetent attacks in the history of man by the Persians). Persian kings had huge military resources at their command to bring to battle - but their use of it was pathetic at best. The Greeks were (in this case the Spartans) where able to use geography to their strategic advantage and hold off tens of thousands of Persian hoards in to allow an over all Greek plan to wear down the Persian forces to a level that the eventual 6000 member Greek allied force to have final victory over the Persians.

Good Luck!!!

True, and I will not spoil the ending for you. This was one of the few documented cases of bravery in the face on impossible odds. This was called the battle of Thermopylae. So rare is this bravery that the Alamo was simply known for years as the Thermoplylae of the west.
