In part 6, it is revealed that Voldemort's mother's name was Merope, daughter of Marvolo, the last predessor of Salazor Slytherin.She married a muggle man(Tom Riddle ) with the help of a love potion.When she gets pregnant she decides not to use the potions any more, thinking that Tom would accept her. But Tom gets rid of her. Depressed Merope decides not to use her Magic anymore.At that time, her father and brother were in Azkaban.Merope dies leaving her child in an orphanage, to be named as Tom Marvolo Riddle.Even not being aware that he was a wizard, Tom controlled his powers very well.Later, Dumbledore(who was a teacher in Hogwarts that time) fetched him to Hogwarts, where Tom tried to gather information about his family through his name.When he came to know about his father, he becomes ashamed of his muggle parentage.In his later years, through Slughorn he comes to know about Horcruxes.He divides his soul into seven parts and starts his horrible game.Harry needs to destroy all the seven parts to kill him(out of which 2 or 3 were recovered and destroyed already by Dumbledore).
