An 'acronym' is a word formed by taking (usually) the first alphabet of a combination of words, so as to make another word for easy reference. There are variations in the way acronyms are formed. More than one letter from any one or more of the combination words could be used; some words in the combination words may not be represented in the acronym; etc. A few examples of acronyms are given below.
WHO: World Health Organization
NASDAQ: National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System
B.Com.: Bachelor of Commerce
CDC: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
COBOL:Common Business Oriented Language
etc.
It is also possible that an acronym may stand for more than one combination of different words in different countries or towns or even in the same town, such as: BA for British Airways, Bachelor of Arts.

Acronyms are abbreviations, that are formed using the initial letters of words or word parts in a phrase or name. Acronyms and initialisms are usually pronounced in a way that is distinct from that of the full forms for which they stand: as the names of the individual letters, as a word, or as a combination.
