To attain maximum level in world of warcraft it is possible for an average user to do this in 6 game days (6x24 hours). For a younger kid I would guess it would probably take 8-10 game days. It takes time to get to the high levels but your son doesn't need to do it over night. The point of the game is to go slow and enjoy the game on the way to level 70. So as long as you can moderate you son's daily/weekly play time then this is an excellent game. It gets your brain working, you have to out and find stuff, think of solutions, be organized, work well in a team.
Many good skills can be attained from the game. The most common negative can be that people get addicted and play 24/7. As a parent you must ensure that doesn't happen but making rules. Just like driving, world of warcraft or games should be a privilege.
If you are going to let your son play games then this is by far one of the best games made. Over 8 million people are playing!

Overall the game isn't that violent. Sure you fight with monsters and occasionally other players but there's barely any blood so I won't be concern and Blizzard keeps a tight policy about cursing, giving away personal information, etc.. Over all you just walk around in a virtual world, collect items, complete quests, play games like capture the flag, gain abilities, the game is almost endless. The only pros I can think of is the game is a lot of fun and you can meet people online (depending on your ideal it can be a good or bad thing). As for cons, the game can get really addicting (a guy in China died of exhaustion after playing for 3 days straight in a internet cafe) and in a long term the game can cost a lot paying the monthly fee. I played it and as long as you don't play for very long time periods you should be fine.

World of Warcraft does depict violence and death but is nowhere near as bad as most other games of the type and doesn't even come close to the violence of the "First Person Shooter" type games. I play and allow my 14 year old daughter to play. The game does allow for some parental control such as limiting the amount of playtime and the blocking of curse words in game chat. If you do decide to allow your child to play I suggest using a system like I do with my daughter. I allow a base amount of playtime and add more time for good grades and subtract time for bad grades. Also, in case you weren't aware of it, once you buy the game there is a $15 a month charge to play. Hope this helps.

It's a bad game not because it is violent, but because your son will become consumed like many others who play it are and are becoming. I am speaking from past experience. Recently I play FAR less, but still occasionally fancy the game.
It's extremely time consuming and to attain the "max level" requires upwards of 40 days playtime, that's 40x24 hours. I advise against your allowing your son to play this game. Get him a game that requires no constant time investment. The more "violent" games such as first person shooters like:
Counter-Strike: Source
Call of Duty
and others have a much lesser effect on real life, if any. World of Warcraft is very subtle in it's ways of deceiving innocence.
Whatever you do, I can not advise any more-so that if your son is a student - DO NOT PURCHASE WORLD OF WARCRAFT. His grades will deteriorate, regardless of self-discipline.. I'm a US Marine and if I hadn't put a stop to the game, it would have effected my life adversely. So unless you want your son to spend countless literally full-time work hours playing a game, I advise otherwise.
Go to www.fileplanet.com to check out other games, or research for yourself just search for first-person shooters (FPS), they're generally entertaining to all males. War is in male blood, whether you accept it in-real life or not... there's no harm in disposing of another player via gun any more-so than there is in slaying a player in World of Warcraft with a spell or a sword. Killing is killing, regardless of means am I right? Nearly all games revolve around the act of killing.
PS...World of Warcraft is synonymous with any other Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (MMORPG), they're all equally addictive and time consuming.

depending on your child's age...my son is 12 and has been playing WoW for about a month now. my husband and i also play, so we were able to make sure he was in a good atmosphere.
make sure your child gets onto a roleplaying server (RP). that will cut down on the incidents of foul language and general stupidity a great deal.
there is some violence, just make sure your child can tell the difference between fantasy and reality. there are options available so you can disallow any player vs. player violence (PvP). monitor his activities online and ingame and definitely limit the playing time.
WoW can be addictive, but if you play in moderation, it can be a great game and a confidence booster for the kids.
on the other hand, i do not allow my 10 year old to play, simply because he does not have the patience for the sometimes tedious gameplay, nor the social skills to deal with the adult players.

I agree somewhat with the First poster. World of Warcraft is not as much violent as it is time consuming. Seeing as youare the boy's parent, it would be important for you to place limits on how much the boy can play.
As it is a Massive Multiplayer Online game, you may have issues with bad language from other players (they try to police it, but he will have to be prepared for it).
As long as you can keep positive control over the boy, and don't let him get out of control with it, he should be fine

Whatever it takes, DON'T LET HIM PLAY. It is not very violent. There's Lord of the Rings type violence with swords and what not, but no superfluous gore or that sort of thing. It's the biggest time-waster ever in my opinion. For 8 months a toiled over leveling one of my characters to 60 and then raiding for many months. It isn't worth your time or your money. Don't let him play. Seriously. He will thank you when he gets older. It is horrible for academics and it's quite addicting. A lot of folks joke that the game should be called "World of Warcrack". Good luck
