40 students sat the exams. 6 failed both.
so, there are 34 students who've passed. Among these 34, there may be students who've passed both..call them x,
the ones who failed math and passed english,
the ones who passed math and failed english.
So:
34 = ones that passed math + ones that passed english - ones that passed both.
34 = 27 + 30 - x
34 = 57 - x
x = 23.

there's the answer!
good luck!

Out of the 40 students, 6 failed both tests, so the amount of students who passed at least one test is 40-6=34.

If 27 students passed math (which is our word for "maths" here on the other side of the Atlantic) , that means 34-27=7 students failed the math test but passed the English test (remember we're already subtracted those who failed both tests). Likewise, 34-30=4 students failed english but passed math. This means the total number of students who passed only one of the two tests must be 7+4 = 11. Therefore 34-11=23 students passed both tests.

Total students: 40
Passed in Maths: 27
Passed in English: 30
Total students failed: 6.
Students passed in one or two subjects = 40 - 6 = 34.
Passed in English and Maths are 27.

Let no. who passed Maths and English = x
No. who passed Maths only = 27 - x
No. who passed English only = 30 - x
No. who failed both papers = 6
(27 - x) + x + (30 - x) + 6 = 40
63 - x = 40
x = 23
23 students passed both English and Maths.

27, because 27 students passed math, so that's the minimum number of students that can pass both math and english
if it were 30, it couldn't be, because there are only 27 who passed math
