...I know - the chance of it happening is perhaps 69 trillion to one, but with our different cultures, throught the globe - with main ones clashing any which way almost every day, will we all attempt to take on the 'unknown force' come the day we will have to strut our stuff with our chemical warfare and determination...at least it'll be a chance for the paranoiac countries to see what warfare their 'enemies' possess if the crap hits the fan (via Uranus - ahem). But all the same. Will we all stand up?

Nice one, Chris W...but depending on the power of the aliens' weaponry, they will sure want to get rid of us - as we're all the same...id est: homo sapien (not mentioning the animal population) - but concerning humans...will they see us as 'all the same' - which reminds me of one races' verdict on another many years ago (which I suspect some still hold). If one society thinks some sort of alliance with the 'aliens' may happen, then I guess they will soon find out!

grpr1964...had to make many an essay on War Of The Worlds at school during the alleged 'swinging sixties'...and was still amazed at relatives in Philadelphia (at around the same time) still talking about 'Martian bacteria' - and most Americans I met at around the same time. As you hint - H.G.Wells was surely a few steps in front of us.

Come on, Neil M...London tube stations between 1939 and 1945 were the best social clubs the city ever had...before or since!

Unfortunately i think there are many people out there that would beleive it was something sent by their god(s) cos they were angry or something.. Perhaps armageddon. I expect some would think they had been sent to help them destroy us or whatever.

Absolutely. There is an expression "nothing binds people together like a common enemy".
During the second world war British people were under threat and London had a community spirit never seen before or since- strangers apparently used to talk to each other in the streets. I've heard old people describe that social interaction as "it was wonderful".

And even better when E.T. lands George W Bush would wet his pants

Well, if this really happened, I bet the human race would form an alliance against the attackers. It's known from history where different people from a country weren't in good relations. But when they had a threat from outside, they confronted it together. Because it's in the benefit of all to survive. If aliens attacked only a certain nation, then I would doubt very much. The only problem would be, the secrets of certain military forces, how they would be prepared to reveal their knowledge to other nations in an occasion like that...

You must read H.G. Wells's "War of the Worlds". The original sci-fi novel, it was written well over 100 years ago, and still provides, in my opinion, the most realistic impression of what such an invasion could be like for us humans (short answer: pretty nasty indeed!).

Or watch a documentary on the Orson Welles (no relation) spoof live radio broadcast on a martian invasion (it was based on H. G. Wells's original story) in 1938 which triggered genuine mass panic in the USA.

I think a bunch of nations would form an aliance, but the aliens would be so much more advanced with their weapons that we would lose anyway. I think there is an intergalatic law that dosen't allow taking over planets without something of a councils permission.

I'd like to believe it, but I very much doubt it. In fact, I think that some countries will ally themselves with the space-beings (provide information, weapon capabilities and so on) just to help destroy their existing (human) enemies.

ATTENTION EARTHLINGS.....I AM A MARTIAN AND YOU HAVE NOT GOT AN EARTHLY CHANCE DEFEATING OUR RACE,SO SURRENDER TO MY THOUGHT BEAM OR YOU ALL WILL BE REDUCED TO GREEN VEGETABLE BLOBS AND WE'LL EAT YOU. I dont think it will help if earthlings got together in the cause of a alien attack because if they've got large heads...they would brain wash us.
