The black suit Spidey storyline has been around for about 20 years now, and a lot of different versions have been told. The one that's used in this film is that J. Jonah Jameson's son, an astronaut, unwittingly brings an alien life-form back to Earth with him. The alien is a liquid-like, symbiotic life-form that bonds with Peter Parker, granting him vastly increased powers. The alien, while fused with Peter, looks like a black suit. Over time, the alien starts exerting control over Peter, subtly influencing his thoughts at first but eventually overtly trying to take control of Peter's mind. After a fair bit of struggle, Parker finally finds a way to rid himself of the alien creature. When he does so, however, it bonds to Eddie Brock, a rival photographer who hates Parker with a passion. Together, Brock and the alien are known as Venom. When the alien bonds to Brock, it carries with him all of Peter's memories and powers. Because of this, Venom is at least as powerful if not more so than Spider-Man; he knows that Parker and Spider-Man are the same person, and he does not trigger Parker's spider-sense.
After getting rid of the symbiote, Peter eventually made a black suit for himself, since he just liked the way that it looked. Venom's in the movie, so we know that Parker's going to get rid of the alien, but I haven't heard about whether he'll stay in black or go back to the classic costume.
The answer in the comics is a LOT more convoluted.
www.wikipedia.com is a good place to go for comic book plots, but it can be overwhelming at times.

There is really no way they could have used the original story from the comics about how Peter bonded with the symbiote. That could be another movie and become way too complicated. I don't think any producer could realistically consider a "Secret Wars" movie. Way too many characters to deal with plus the event happened over 20 years ago. I believe the writers of the film had to work Eddie Brock and Venom in somehow, seeing as he was one of the most popular Spidey villains in recent years. Personally, I wish they would have left Sandman out. I don't want the Spidey film franchise to get bogged down in multiple villains like the Batman films of the mid-90s were. Still, I'm looking forward to Spidey 3.

It started about 20 years ago in an issue of The Secret Wars. The Marvel Hereos were on a space station somewhere in the galaxy and Spiderman was searching rooms for villians when he came across a black ball inside of a case. He grabbed it and it came onto his skin and consumed him. He could not run out of web, and he doesnt have to change in or out of the costume. Its not really a costume at all. It's more like his skin.
