How did terrestrial (land based) life get started on earth if there was no oxygen present in the atmosphere 500 million yrs ago?

It is belived that Fungus (that does not use oxygen) but priduced it was the beginning of an atmosphere on earth.

The first land based life on land was basic types of plant life, like fungus. Plantlife lives on carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen. That was how oxygen was put into the atmostphere. Animals take in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Thats why people are worried about the rainforests being cut down as it will lead to a reduction of oxygen in the atmostphere
