Since you are getting the message "connection timed out" the ping request is able to be sent but does not receive a response before the packet TTL expires. This is usually the firewall of the ISP does not reply to ping command or one of the routers on the internet is blocking the request. If there was a problem with the network card, cable or your router then the message would be "destination host unreachable" meaning there no active routes to the IP address. Most ISP give a dynamic IP address and DNS server addresses. If this is the case with your ISP then open a command prompt and type ipconfig/all assuming your using winXP. You will see your physical adaptor with the IP address info. If the IP address starts with 192.xx.xx.xx or 10.xx.xx.xx then you have a router that is configured to give your card the local addresses to your side of the internet (lan). The DHCP server will start with the addreses 192 or 10 .

Try to ping yahoo.com and see if you get a response. If not then then try to ping one of the DNS servers address from above.

If you get a ping response from the DNS server and not the yahoo.com address then the problem lies in the ISP's DNS server not being able to resolve the domain name to the IP address.

If you are not successful at either then call the ISP so they can run the test on the line for line noise. Also check the wan light on the modem or router most are solid green when okay and orange or red or just off to indicate a connection problem.

Hope this helps

It could be the ISP, that would be temporary. It could be a firewall.. if you have a firewall that isn't installed properly or the installation didn't finish.. that may be it. Next is your router which could be blocking the connection and next is your modem. Turn off hardware in this order. Computer(all computers connected to a router if you have one), Router(if you have one), Modem, Turn on in this order after waiting 10 minutes. Modem, Router(if you have one), Computer. That should fix any hardware problems you have.
