The Lagoon is a short story by Joseph Conrad composed in 1896 and first published in Cornhill Magazine in 1897. The story is about Arsat, a Malay travelling through an Indonesian rainforest with a sick woman in a small boat.

The story that Arsat tells "tuan" is one of sadness and betrayel. Arsat tells of the time when he kidnapped Diamelen with his brother whom he was very close with. They almost succeeded in getting away when a boat came after their little canoe to stop them from taking Diamelen. Fleeing from the larger boat, they stopped at small forest where Arsat and Diamelen could run to a fisherman's house where there was a boat they could use. Arsat was instructed to wait for his brother while the latter held off their pursuers. However, Arsat did everything except wait for his brother. As he pushed the boat from shore, he saw his brother running down the path, being chased by their pursuers. Arsat's brother trips and the enemy is upon him. Arsat never looked back. He basically murdered his brother for for a woman he loved, a love that was ending. Diamelen got sick and died in the end. Arsat has nothing now, he doesn't have a brother or a wife. He has lost everything.
